Bowen Therapy

The human body has an incredible ability to heal itself when given the right conditions. Bowen Therapy gently activates this natural healing response by sending signals through the nervous system, encouraging the body to reset and restore balance.

What is Bowen Therapy and How Does it Work?

Bowtech, known as the original Bowen Technique, is a gentle type of bodywork that uses very subtle movements over the muscles and connective tissues. These movements send signals deep within the body, restoring cellular memory to a preferred, relaxed, and balanced state of well-being. Often, results can be remarkable, even from the first session; typically, only a few sessions are needed to address the presenting issue.

During each session, there are frequent but crucial pauses, giving the body time to respond and start the healing process. The practitioner can either concentrate on a specific issue or treat the body as a whole.

Unlike many other hands-on therapies, the Bowen Technique does not involve forceful manipulation. Instead, it relies on the practitioner's unique skill in sensing tissue tension. This ability allows them to detect stress buildup in muscles and other soft tissues, and to perform specific Bowen moves to aid in recovery.

This technique addresses the musculoskeletal framework, fascia, nerves, and internal organs. The body’s integrated response enhances circulation, lymphatic drainage, and helps in the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins.

Bowen Therapy is versatile and can help clients at all levels. Tom Bowen, the founder, believed that this technique could address any and every condition.

Can Bowen Therapy Help Me?

The Bowen Technique is extremely gentle, making it suitable for everyone, from pregnant women to newborns, the frail, and the elderly.

It can aid recovery from various conditions, from traumatic injuries to chronic illnesses, depending on each person’s healing capacity. Notably, there have been no adverse side effects reported.

The technique may be beneficial for:

    Back pain and sciatica

Digestive and bowel problems, including IBS

    Ear-aches, ear infections, and migraines

    Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome

    Knee, ankle, and foot issues

    Menstrual and hormonal irregularities

Neck and shoulder problems, including frozen shoulder

Groin pain, pelvic tilt, and uneven leg length

    Respiratory problems and hay fever

RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tennis elbow

    Sports and accident injuries

Can I Use Other Therapies?

A Bowen session initiates a cascade of beneficial changes that continue for several days. Using other manipulative therapies during this time can interrupt this process and undermine the effectiveness of the Bowen work. Therefore, it is recommended to wait a week before starting any other manual therapy.

Where Did the Bowen Technique Originate?

The Bowen Technique was developed in the 1950s by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia.

Tom Bowen became a renowned therapist, treating over 13,000 patients annually. In 1974, Bowen invited Oswald Rentsch and his wife Elaine to study and document his work. Honoring their promise to Bowen, they started teaching the technique in 1986.

Since then, over 20,000 therapists worldwide have received Bowen training. The Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia, founded in 1987 by Oswald and Elaine, is dedicated to preserving and teaching the technique in its original form.
